Macao Special Administrative Region (Região Administrativa Especial de Macau) was established on December 20, 1999 as a result of the elimination of the Portuguese colony of Macau, and became one of the two special administrative regions of China, the other being Hong Kong. Over 442 years of Portuguese administration in Macau, it was the oldest European colony in East Asia.
